Pitt Launches Sustainable Business Micro-Credential

The new Sustainable Business micro-credential offered by the University of Pittsburgh’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business provides essential skills and knowledge to understand the crucial role of sustainability across various functions within an organization, leading to improved business performance and positive societal outcomes.

The nine-credit program, approved in Spring 2023, offers graduate students and working professionals the opportunity to develop a range of skills that are in high demand in today’s business landscape. The coursework emphasizes a long-term approach to the relationship between business, society, and the environment, enabling all stakeholders to benefit from sustainable practices.

Credentials are among the flexible and lower-cost ways of learning specialized competencies. These courses enable students or professionals to earn credits toward a formal degree program or gain specialized knowledge and skills in specific areas of business,” said Sara Moeller, senior associate dean of Teaching and Learning at Pitt Business. “This new micro-credential demonstrates our commitment to educating future business leaders who can effectively manage long-term value creation for organizations.”

Make a Positive Impact

Participants in the Sustainable Business micro-credential will be well-positioned to make a positive impact in the world of business. Benefits include:

  • First, participants will learn how to identify environmental and societal risks and opportunities, enabling them to make informed decisions that align with sustainability goals. This skill is crucial in navigating the complexities of the modern business world while ensuring responsible practices.
  • Second, the program focuses on developing business strategies that prioritize long-term value creation for organizations. Participants will gain insights into sustainable practices that can drive profitability, while also considering the impact on society and the environment. This holistic approach encourages businesses to embrace sustainability as a core value rather than a mere add-on.
  • Lastly, the micro-credential emphasizes the importance of engaging an organization’s entire workforce in executing sustainable business goals. Participants will learn effective techniques to foster a culture of sustainability within organizations, enabling employees to contribute to and champion sustainable practices.

Flexible Options

Pitt’s Center for Sustainable Business, which has been actively supporting companies and students since 2019, is instrumental in delivering this program. The Center has a track record of helping organizations leverage investments in sustainability. The University ranks #34 nationwide in the QS World University Sustainability Rankings among other national and regional achievements.

The Sustainable Business micro-credential, one of 10 different specializations offered by Katz, offers flexibility to participants. The required courses will be offered in both the Fall and Spring terms, while limited electives will be available during Fall, Spring, and Summer. This ensures that participants can tailor their learning experience to suit their schedules and interests.
