Sharon Alvarez, Thomas W. Olofson Chair in Entrepreneurship and Professor of Business Administration, has been elected by the membership to the Academy of Management Board of Governors Executive track. Her five-year term begins as Vice President Elect and Program Chair Elect, culminating as President of the Academy of Management, and a final year as Past President.
“Sharon’s election leading to her position as President of the Academy role will further enhance her visibility and serve as a source of pride for Pitt Business,” says Arjang A. Assad, Henry E. Haller Jr. Dean. “I’m looking forward to seeing all that she accomplishes in this leadership role.”
The Academy of Management is the preeminent professional association for management and organization scholars. Its worldwide members consist of business professors and doctoral students, academics in related social sciences and other fields, and practitioners who value knowledge creation and application. Founded in 1936, its global community today is nearly 20,000 strong and spans over 120 countries.
“In many ways, I have been building toward this position my entire career,” said Alvarez. “I have been the chair of the research committee and chair of the entrepreneurship division of Academy of Management, which was also a five-year commitment.”
Alvarez recently finished a three-year term as an editor of the Academy of Management Review, the flagship journal of the Academy of Management. Her theoretical research “Discovery and Creation: Alternative Theories of Entrepreneurial Action” won the Academy of Management’s Entrepreneurship Division 2019 Foundational Paper Award and the Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal Best Paper Award.
Alvarez earned her doctoral degree in business administration with a concentration in entrepreneurship and strategic management and her bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Colorado and her master’s degree in international management from the University of Denver.
“Given Sharon’s enthusiasm, creativity, and work ethic, we can expect significant initiatives that will further enhance the reputation and impact of the Academy in the years ahead,” said John E. Prescott, Thomas O’Brien Chair of Strategy and Professor of Business Administration.
