We prepare and inspire leaders to shape a better future through business.

Pitt Business 2030

Pitt Business 2030 is our community’s strategic roadmap. Building on the University’s Plan for Pitt, at its heart is a commitment to equipping the next generation of business leaders to rise to the challenges of an ever-changing world. It articulates a new mission and vision, identifies areas where we will build distinctive excellence, and sets priorities for propelling Pitt Business into the future.

Creating Our Strategic Roadmap

Developing Pitt Business 2030 required us to ask hard questions about who we are, where we want to go, and what’s of greatest importance in getting there. It’s the product of a systematic program of conversations and meetings with hundreds of stakeholders, including students, staff, faculty, board members, university administrators, and corporate partners.

Together, we considered the challenges facing business and higher education, and developed a new strategic framework with widely agreed upon goals. The result is a strategic plan that will guide us through 2030 and beyond.

The strategic refresh process was a great opportunity to discuss the complexities and state of higher education today – as well as our school’s strengths and weaknesses. This plan helps all of us to focus on what we’re going to do – and what we’re not going to do. This also helps to align people to know the school’s future and where every one of us fits in.

    Our Mission

To advance a prosperous, just, and sustainable future through business education, scholarship, and service.

    Paths to Distinction

While the future is hard to predict, what is clear is that many of today’s most pressing challenges — including technological disruption, social polarization, and climate change — will continue to affect our lives at every scale. It’s also clear that business must be a part of addressing these complex problems or there will be no solutions.

With this in mind, our strategic plan calls for developing thematic strengths at the nexus of business and three global imperatives – healthcare, digital transformation, and social and environmental sustainability.

Health Sciences: The need for business leadership in the healthcare and life sciences sector has never been greater. Through leveraging the strengths of Pitt Business, Pitt, and the region’s thriving ecosystem in healthcare and the life sciences, we will design curricula and pursue scholarship that meet this increasing global need.

Digital Transformation: All business is increasingly digital business. Pitt Business has long been a leader in education and research at the nexus of business and digital technology, including the latter’s potential for innovation, growth, and good. Building on these strengths, we will ensure all graduates are equipped for the jobs of today and prepared for the challenges of tomorrow.

Societal Impact: Businesses and business leaders are increasingly held accountable for their impact on the environment and society. Pitt Business has a rich history of research, teaching, and engagement related to environmental and social sustainability.  We will build on this strength to develop a new generation of business leaders and scholars equipped to grapple with and address global challenges facing businesses and communities.

    Three Paths to Distinction Graphic

We will seek to build distinctive excellence around each of these three themes, leverage the strengths of the business community and our home university, and make Pitt Business even more of a destination for students, faculty, staff, recruiters, and partners.

    Our Commitments

To make progress towards our vision and mission, our community has identified five strategic commitments:

Reimagine Programs: Ensure each offering prepares students to meet tomorrow’s challenges, appropriately leverages the Paths to Distinction, and fulfills a strategic role.

Engage Pittsburgh: Pursue mutually beneficial partnerships at home and abroad – especially those that advance and support the three Paths to Distinction.

Research with Impact: Strengthen our research faculty, increase the impact of our research, and diversify sources of research funding.

Business for All: Foster an academic community that’s welcoming to all and maximizes the Pitt Business experience for each of its members.

One Pitt Business: Advance a unified and distinctive brand identity, communicate impactfully to all constituencies, and pursue all activities with a One Pitt Business mindset.

In the short term, the plan will enable our school to right size the offerings and deliver world-class knowledge in a nimble fashion. In the long term, it will position us to attract and develop a top tier diverse student base ready to conquer the world!
