Ethics and Leadership Speaker Series Honors Dean Frederick

Professor Cristina B. Gibson from Pepperdine Graziadio Business School was the first lecturer in the new William C. Frederick Speaker Series on Ethics and Leadership on Friday, March 22, 2024. This speaker series was created to honor William C. Frederick, former dean of the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business and College of Business Administration.

Professor Gibson is an expert on dignity and inclusion at work, corporate-community partnerships, social innovation, and technology-enabled collaboration. She shared her research on corporate-community co-development. This research was recently recognized with the 2023 Academy of Management Fellow’s Responsible Research in Business and Management Distinguished Award for social impact and the American Psychological Association Humanitarian Impact Award.

“Professor Gibson’s research challenges simplistic notions that corporate social responsibility is either exploitative or uniformly beneficial and offers rich insights about the ways CSR programs can be designed to increase community benefit,” says Trevor Young-Hyman, assistant professor of Business Administration and Sociology at Pitt Business, who attended this lecture. “Her work is an admirable example of scholarship that combines methodological rigor and practical impact.”

The late Dean Frederick (1926-2018) first came to Pitt as an associate dean, then served as dean of Pitt Business from 1963-1966. Once his tenure as dean ended, Frederick served as a professor at the University until 1991, focusing on business ethics and values, and corporate social responsibility. He published several books, including: Values, Nature, and Culture in the American Corporation; Corporation, Be Good! The Story of Corporate Social Responsibility; and Natural Corporate Management: From the Big Bang to Wall Street.
